For many commercial and industrial buildings, wide doorways are a common design feature – whether it is loading docks at large warehouses and logistics centers, main entrances at factory workshops, or open entrances at shopping malls and supermarkets. But when the door width exceeds the standard length of a single air curtain, many purchasers and contractors run into the same problem: one air curtain is not long enough – what should I do?
The answer is simple: either customize, or combine.
Part 1: Why Must Air Curtain Length Match Door Width?
The working principle of an air curtain is to create a high-speed airflow barrier above the doorway, separating indoor and outdoor air. If the air curtain is shorter than the door width, gaps will remain on both sides – cold and warm air will exchange freely through the gaps, insects and dust will enter, and the air curtain becomes useless.
Air curtain length must equal or slightly exceed the door width – this is the number one rule in selection.
Part 2: Two Solutions for Wide Doorways
Solution 1: Non-Standard Customization – One Air Curtain, Custom-Made to Fit
Different buildings have different door widths. Standard lengths (typically 0.9m, 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m, 2.0m, etc.) cannot cover every scenario. If your door width falls outside the standard range, or if you prefer a single unit to cover the entire opening without gaps, non-standard customization is the most direct solution.
As an air curtain manufacturer, we support customizing unit length based on actual door dimensions. Whether it is 1.6m, 2.2m, or 2.8m – any special width can be produced to order, ensuring one unit perfectly covers the entire doorway.
Advantages of custom sizing: One unit covers the entire doorway, installation is cleaner, control is unified, and the appearance is more integrated. For commercial spaces where aesthetics matter – shopping malls, hotels, showrooms – custom solutions are often the better choice.
Solution 2: Multiple Units – Install Two or More Air Curtains Side by Side
If the doorway is far wider than standard lengths (for example, 4 meters, 6 meters, or even wider), or if the project budget does not support a custom solution, using multiple standard units installed side by side is another proven approach.
The method is simple: based on the total door width, select standard units of appropriate length and install them side by side on the same door header, with outlets aligned to form a continuous airflow barrier.
For example:
A 2-meter doorway: two 1.0m units side by side
A 2.4-meter doorway: two 1.2m units side by side
A 4-meter doorway: three 1.2m units or two 2.0m units side by side
Key points for multiple-unit installation:
Spacing between units: Leave 10-40mm clearance between adjacent units to avoid physical interference, while ensuring airflow merges into a continuous barrier at the doorway
Synchronized control: A synchronized control system is recommended to ensure all units start/stop together and operate at the same speed, preventing airflow interference that creates "gaps"
Consistent mounting height: All units must be installed at the same level to ensure uniform airflow direction
Part 3: Width Is Not the Only Factor to Consider
Door width determines the required length of the air curtain, but selection also depends on door height and installation environment.
Door height determines the required air speed. The higher the door, the farther the airflow must travel – and the higher the nozzle air speed required. Standard models typically cover up to 2.5-3.0 meters in mounting height. For doors exceeding 3 meters, high-airflow, high-speed models are needed. For doorways above 4 meters, industrial-grade or high-velocity products are required.
Installation environment also matters. For doorways near roads or in dusty areas, choose units with effective separation distance greater than door height. For cold storage or food processing facilities, special requirements like anti-condensation and low-temperature resistance must be considered.

Part 5: Summary
Wide doorway and one air curtain not long enough? No need to worry. Either customize one long enough, or install multiple units side by side – both solutions work perfectly.
The key is: select based on actual door dimensions and application scenarios – don't just grab any unit and hope it works.
